TEACHABLE MOMENTs
WORKSHOPS & SEMINARS
So you want to learn more about flowers and the business of it all?
I'd love to teach you what I know with the help of fellow flower friends. These intensive workshops are designed especially for florists and aspiring florists with the intention to grow a skilled, profitable industry capable of achieving world-class design standards. |
V-DAY = D-DAY Valentine’s Day is the number one holiday for florists and for floral purchases, and second to Christmas/Chanukah in dollars spent. In 2019, 28 percent of American adults (37% of men, 19% of women) purchased flowers or plants as gifts for Valentine’s Day. While men buy mostly for romantic reasons, women use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to show they care to mothers, friends, children, as well as their sweethearts. Women even treat themselves on Valentine’s Day. It is estimated that more than 250 million roses are produced for Valentine’s Day. CREDIT: aboutflowers.com
Locally, in The Bahamas, the floral industry looks forward to the opportunity to capitalize on the spike in interest. Where a retail florist may average 10 - 20 designs a day on any normal business day, Valentine's Day brings a rush of orders upwards of 40 - 80 designs ranging in scale. These numbers aren't the output of a flower shop, they are the output of an individual florist. Profits typically made in a month, are made in one day on Valentine's Day. For these reasons, plus countless others, it makes no sense for a florist (whether aspiring or seasoned) to sit out this lucrative holiday. As with all things, however, preparation and strategy are key to a successful execution.
As a retail florist, I've been attacking Valentine's Day since 2013. I started off pretty rocky, but over time, I've developed a 90% fool-proof strategy. Why not 100%? There are many variables to be considered when preparing for Valentine's Day. The nature of flowers - perishables that are grown somewhere else in the world - plus the reliance on a host of other entities to get your flowers from the farm to your workshop to the final destination of it's glowing recipient offers enough space and opportunity for things to go wrong. But, I've got you! Once you're done with these intensive workshops, you'll be equipped to conquer the good, the bad, and the ugly of Valentine's Day!

WHY KANDICE, WHY?Hi Flower Friend! I'm Kandice Cargill. I stumbled into the field of flowers as a full-time professional back in 2015 and have been nurturing a garden of knowledge {Flower Power} ever since. Where the industry was inundated with designers focusing on wedding gigs, I chose a different direction. Why you ask? Because I believe in finding the white space in the market and filling it in! In fact, that's what I'm doing right now. Let me take a few steps back to bring you up to speed.
My educational background is in Public Relations and Marketing, but I have always been an Art & Design student. Prior to Kandice Hanna Creative, I launched and led the design team of Bloom Bahamas. Before that, I was known primarily for my nightclub and marketing events produced by Events by iCandy and The Little Pink Party. With every project, I learn its theory and inner design in order to develop a product, package it, and launch something brand new to the market. I want to show you just how to do that for yourself, in this industry of retail flowers. When I started out, there was no one to show me the ropes. Admittedly, I didn't actually ask for help, but truthfully, I didn't see anyone doing what I was setting out to do in the market. I wanted to focus on luxury retail, corporate, and yacht flowers with a world-class, metropolitan style of design. No one else took the same approach. I wanted to create a business I can leave to future generations. In fact, when I started, I was literally the youngest retail florist on the island. I've heard too many veteran florists say, "I don't expect to get rich doing this." Well buddy, we're already different! Nearly five years into this, I've worked diligently perfecting systems that work, that are profitable, and that are manageable. I am passionate about the longevity of this beloved flower industry and I wish to see it grow. I went through a long period of being territorial of my style, technique, and knowledge of the inner workings of the local industry. But then... I had an "A-HA!" moment. In order for this industry to grow and truly flourish in this {whole wide} world, we need more people. The Bahamas is poised to be a leader in the region, so why not build that army with new recruits? Our industry is ready for fresh faces, new skills and more excitement. |
